Psychedelic Medicine

Plant medicines, used for centuries for their healing properties, are finally reaching the Western medical system.

Roaring Fork Neurology is currently collaborating with and training local providers from Rifle to Aspen to safely use these medications for patients struggling with various neurological and mental health disorders.

We offer psychedelic medicines in conjunction with therapy, during the psychedelic experience and/or within 72 hours of that experience. This is what is known as “integration” through psychedelic assisted psychotherapy. Psychedelic medicines can bring up traumatic experiences in some but tend to offer a person exactly what they are ready to handle. The psychedelic treatment itself allows for a period of time where the brain is more flexible in terms of neuronal pathways, sparking neuroplasticity and dendritic sprouting. Working with the right therapist during that flexible time can allow someone to process difficulty emotions, create meaning from their prior experiences, and even create new healthy habits around socialization, relationships with others, mindfulness, gratitude, diet, exercise, and sleep. The psychedelic medicine is the catalyst for healing work in the right setting.

In the fall of 2022, the State of Colorado approved Proposition 122, a measure that allows healing centers in Colorado to provide psychedelic plants and fungi under supervision in a safe setting.

The first psychedelic plant medicine that Roaring Fork Neurology will offer will be psilocybin, in early 2025. It is our intention to become a psilocybin healing center when the Natural Medicine Advisory Board makes recommendations for licensure in late 2024.

Patient Testimonial

“My depression had a familiar pattern; new antidepressant , a couple of years of effective treatment, then a plateau that felt mind numbing and ineffective. Switching to a new medication felt like throwing darts at a dart board and after 20 years of treatment I was extremely tired of this process. Numerous attempts at no antidepressants resulted in suicidal ideation within six months, then the antidepressants were started again and the pattern continued.

When I decided to try Ketamine therapy I had no idea what I was signing up for, I just knew I was tired of the same antidepressant experience and that if ketamine helped great, and if it didn’t , well at least I’d tried.

The entire process from the initial intake meeting, to the treatments themselves, to the integration therapy sessions, were all conducted with thoughtful, caring professionalism in a soothing and safe environment that allowed me to step into an unknown world without any qualms. The protocols and team Dr Allen has put in place insure a medically and physically safe ketamine experience.

Ketamine is a journey of self discovery and with the right integration therapist and a willingness to participate in my own healing it proved to be an insightful tool in my depression treatment.  I felt “unstuck”, I felt less depressed, I felt hopeful.

I have experienced insights and changes in my mental health in the past year that I know are a direct result of my ketamine journey. I am looking forward to experiencing another session in the future and continuing on this path of self discovery and lifted depression symptoms. I highly recommend  trying ketamine at NeuroSpa to help in your depression treatment program.”
